NAME: Cyrus Albright
CANON: Octopath Traveler
CANON POINT: Post Cyrus' Chapter 2
AGE: 30
BACKGROUND: Octopath Traveler, Cyrus Albright
PERSONALITY:
Cyrus Albright is a man of many words, and even more curiosities. He begins his journey as a professor at the Royal Academy in Atlasdam, with two young female students: Therese, and the Princess Mary. To those he teaches, he is steadfast and attentive, encouraging them to always ask questions both of their mentors and the world around them. He believes that the ardent pursuit of knowledge benefits all, and sincerely wishes that his students would nurture their inquisitive natures so that they too might contribute to the betterment of society, whether as scholars such as himself or otherwise.
For all of his bright and optimistic views on knowledge and academia, Cyrus is far from naïve, knowing perfectly well not all share his mindset. For example, the headmaster of the school at which he works—his very boss—exhibits the selfish side of academics, touting that knowledge is power and withholding select knowledge from others will make the wielder advantageous, and perhaps even one deserving of respect. This firmly goes against Cyrus' values as a scholar of integrity, as it is his firm belief that knowledge belongs to all men equally and should be spread continuously, without any selfish barrings or unseemly restrictions—unless, of course, the knowledge is of the dangerous sort and puts too much at risk should it ever fall into the wrong hands. Despite this conflict of opinions however, he remains wise enough to hold his tongue when necessary, such as when he acquiesces to the headmaster's berating and obnoxious demands if only to retain access to the academy's grand archives, for his own personal research.
Alongside his natural-born quality of constantly scrutinizing and wondering of his surroundings, therein lies his compulsion to never leave a mystery unsolved. Should a riddle or puzzle or any sort of enigma cross his path, he would sooner cast away his other tedium to chase the trail than let it roll on without anyone to see its unraveling through. While this is useful to those who might benefit from his passionate researching and problem-solving, it's also a reliable hindrance for himself and his companions should the effort to press onwards be halted by Cyrus' yet unquenched curiosity.
Though his insatiable thirst for the knowledge of the world has its advantages and certainly even its charms, there is one area the professor is notably challenged in when it comes to his own practical experiences: romance. He's infamous across the Flatlands whence he hails for his beauty and brains, recognized as an incredibly eligible bachelor with eloquence and charisma, as well as "a face that girls are like to fancy," as Primrose puts it while lecturing him on the hearts of maidens. Despite all his intelligence and academic prowess pouring forth, he lacks a mind for attraction, and thus the awareness of how his own words and actions may come across to others, as well.
For example, when his student Therese expresses her jealousy over the princess receiving more of the professor's attentions than she, Cyrus apologizes profusely for never having realized how strongly Therese felt towards... her studies. Even his former colleague Odette sends him a letter, complimenting his head while simultaneously decrying her junior's density when it comes to women. As the two had known each other for ten years at least, Cyrus' obliviousness has been consistent for one decade strong, minimum. Repeatedly, his striving to act the gentleman in all situations, combined with his genuine and kind smiles as well as his honeyed, affectionate language have all contributed to many, many a misunderstanding over the years.
All in all, Cyrus is a good-natured and well-mannered individual with a slight penchant for getting himself into trouble, wittingly or otherwise. Though whenever he does, he has the tools to get himself out of said trouble—and should he lack what he needs, he's capable of befriending and relying on others to make up for his shortcomings.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Cyrus is a mage who can harness three elements (fire, ice, lightning) through native talent, casting powerful spells down on multiple enemies at once (strengths ranging from small sparks in his fingers to storm clouds over an area with 10 meters' diameter, though the average use is about 5m). He's also learned wind magic from his merchant friend Tressa.
Another one of his talents is being able to observe a person and conjecture their life stories, but this will occasionally earn him the subject's ire or reprehension should they notice (Path Action: Scrutinize).
INVENTORY: Three magical tomes, one to each element. A merchant's outfit (secondary job).
MOONBLESSING: Cordis
